Team India’s journey through the Olympics has been a tapestry woven with threads of tradition and evolving design. Here’s a glimpse into the past five opening ceremony dresses:
- 2012 London Olympics
For the 2012 London Olympics, the Indian contingent stepped onto the world stage in a timeless look. The outfits celebrated India’s rich heritage on a brighter side with heavy detailing. The designers prioritized comfort for the athletes. The white shirts worn by male athletes & the yellow sarees for their female counterparts were crafted from breathable fabrics, ideal for the London summer.
Their outfits were complemented by navy blue blazers – while men also donning beige trousers & yellow safas. Such a pairing allowed for ease of their movement without compromising on the style during the ceremony.
- 2016 Rio Olympics:
The 2016 Rio Olympics opening ceremony saw India’s athletes sporting a unique outfit designed by fashion designer Ritu Kumar. While the intent was to create a striking visual, the ensemble sparked mixed reactions.
Her designs mainly aimed to represent a modern India. Her vision for the women athletes involved a vibrant yellow saree, a symbol of Indian womanhood, paired with a navy blue blazer. This unexpected fusion sparked debate, with some appreciating the contemporary twist on tradition, while others felt it devalued the saree’s cultural significance.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, India’s athletes didn’t just showcase their athletic prowess, they made a striking entrance during the opening ceremony thanks to Raymond, the official styling partner for the Indian contingent.
The men sported a vibrant bandhgala jacket in a deep navy hue, featuring intricate gold embroidery along the collar and cuffs. It was paired with crisp navy blue trousers. The women athletes donned stunning golden salwar suits with a navy blue blazer. The salwar kameez, a symbol of Indian heritage, was crafted from a flowing golden fabric with a subtle shimmer. The dupatta (scarf) featured a similar navy blue border as the men’s attire, creating a cohesive team aesthetic.

- A Tribute to Indian Craftsmanship: The traditional craft of Banaras brocade weaving finds a place in the design, celebrating India’s rich textile heritage.

- Breathable Comfort: Cotton, a fabric deeply ingrained in India’s history since the 13th century, forms a major part of the uniform. Its breathability ensures comfort while paying homage to the Swadeshi movement and its symbol of self-reliance – Khadi.
