At Tasva, the 2024 Paris Olympics held a special significance. We were not just spectators; we were entrusted with the incredible honour of designing the official ceremonial dress for Team India. This prestigious opportunity presented a unique challenge – creating a garment transcending mere clothing, symbolising national pride, sporting excellence, and India’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
This blog delves into the journey of designing this special uniform, from the initial spark of inspiration to the final creation that will grace the world stage.
Finding the Perfect Blend: Inspiration and Ideation
The design process began with a central theme: “Modern Fusion.” We envisioned a uniform that celebrated India’s rich heritage while embracing a contemporary aesthetic. We explored classic Indian silhouettes, particularly the Nehru jacket for men and the saree for women. However, we knew a straightforward translation wouldn’t suffice. We aimed for a fresh perspective, incorporating modern layers and cuts to create a look that was both stylish and functional.
Comfort Takes Center Stage: Designing for Champions
For athletes, comfort and functionality are paramount. We prioritized these aspects by seamlessly integrating traditional elements with modern considerations. The men’s attire features a classic kurta-churidar combination, ensuring freedom of movement. The kurta incorporates functional cargo pockets, adding a sporty touch while providing essential storage. For the women, we explored a fusion concept.
We drew inspiration from the saree’s elegance and flow but reimagined it for a more contemporary setting. This resulted in a comfortable yet stylish dress that allowed for unrestricted movement.
A Tribute to Heritage: The Fabric Choice
A Tribute to Indian Heritage: Khadi
The selection of fabric wasn’t merely aesthetic; it held a deeper meaning. We chose cotton, a fabric deeply woven into India’s textile history. Dating back to the 13th century, cotton played a pivotal role in the Swadeshi movement, symbolising self-reliance and freedom. Moreover, its breathability ensures comfort in the Parisian summer heat. The ivory colour adds another layer of significance. It embodies serenity and purity, aligning with the ethos of India.
We incorporated Khadi into the design to further emphasise our commitment to India’s heritage. This iconic fabric, synonymous with Mahatma Gandhi’s independence movement, represents the spirit of self-reliance and sustainability. We used Khadi in subtle accents, such as piping or inner linings, to pay homage to India’s rich textile tradition.
The Power of Tricolour
The Indian tricolour – saffron, white, and green – is a potent symbol of national pride. We incorporated these colours subtly throughout the uniform, fostering a sense of unity and connection between the athletes and their heritage. For the men’s attire, green and orange Ikat printed panels and tapes represent the green and saffron bands of the flag, respectively. The women’s dress incorporates similar colour accents.
Additionally, buttonholes in blue represent the Ashoka Chakra, another prominent feature of the flag. The use of ivory throughout the uniform completes the tricolour motif, reinforcing the symbolic significance of national unity and harmony.
Celebrating Craft: The Beauty of Ikkat
Ikkat, a traditional textile weaving technique, is a visual celebration of India’s artistic heritage. Its intricate patterns, achieved through a complex tie-and-dye process, are a testament to the country’s rich craftsmanship. We incorporated Ikat-inspired prints into the design, adding a touch of elegance and showcasing the beauty of this timeless art form.
Beyond Aesthetics: The Science of Comfort
For the Paris summer heat, breathability was crucial. Viscose crepe emerged as the perfect choice for both the men’s kurta and the women’s dress. This fabric drapes beautifully, offering a flattering silhouette.
The addition of viscose enhances softness and allows for vibrant prints. Furthermore, its moisture-wicking properties ensure comfort in humid conditions. The lightweight fabric is designed for long-lasting wear and minimal creasing, ensuring the athletes look their best throughout the ceremony.
From Sketch to Reality: The Creation Process
Once the design was finalized, a meticulous creation process began. Sketches were translated into prototypes, meticulously crafted by skilled artisans. Fittings were conducted to ensure comfort and mobility, with adjustments made for each athlete. The intricate details, from the placement of Ikat prints to the colour of buttonholes, were meticulously overseen.

The final ceremonial dress stands as a testament to the dedication and collaboration of designers, artisans, and athletes. It embodies the spirit of India – a nation that reveres its past while embracing innovation. This uniform is more than just clothing; it’s a symbol of national pride, sporting excellence, and the unwavering spirit of Team India.
